What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy focuses on understanding what is currently happening for the client and how they experience their past in their present everyday lives. All of us have a tendency to separate aspects of ourselves into different ‘boxes’. A Gestalt approach encourages integration of these to help the individual to understand and experience themselves more as a whole person. It is a holistic approach, giving equal importance to the physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual elements.

Gestalt therapy is humanistic and is based on the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client. This therapy places value on experience providing space, experimentation, questioning, and self-reflection. As the client develops deeper understanding of how they currently react and respond, underlying emotional issues or re-occurring difficulties can be responded to differently. The goal of Gestalt therapy is for the client to become more self-governing and self-supportive.
